How much does it cost to publish a children's book in the UK?

Short answer: anywhere from £0 to £7,000+, depending entirely on the route you choose and how much of the work you pay someone else to do. There is no single price, because "publishing" covers four very different paths, and they cost the author completely different amounts.

Publishing a children's book in the UK can cost from £0 to £7,000 or more: £0 with a traditional publisher or the £0-upfront launchpad route, roughly £1,000–£4,000 to self-publish a well-made book yourself, or ~£2,000–£7,000+ for a paid hybrid service.

Here is the honest breakdown, so you can cost out your own book before you commit to anything.

The four routes, and what each really costs

RouteUpfront cost to youWho does the workTypical royalty to youRealistic timeline
Traditional publisher£0 (they pay you, sometimes an advance)The publisher, if they accept you~8–10% (via an agent, who takes ~15%)12–24 months, if accepted
Self-publish, do-it-yourself (e.g. Amazon KDP)£0 platform fee, but you pay for everything elseYou, every step, aloneUp to ~60–70% of list price, minus print costDays to weeks once your files are ready
Hybrid / assisted self-publishing~£2,000–£7,000+ (often quote-only)A service, for a fee you pay upfrontHigher than traditional; you paid for itA few months
Launchpad (FossPress)£0 upfrontWe run the launch; you keep writingRev-share, we only earn when your book sellsWeeks to first listing

Figures are indicative UK ranges at the time of writing and vary by book, illustration and supplier, treat them as a starting point for your own quotes, not a price list.

Where the money actually goes (the do-it-yourself route)

The "£0" of self-publishing is the platform fee. The real cost of a children's book is the production work, and children's titles cost more than adult ones because of the artwork. Indicative UK ranges:

So a self-published children's chapter book done well typically lands somewhere around £1,000–£4,000, and you still have to run the launch yourself.

Why "free" (KDP) and "£0 upfront" (FossPress) are not the same thing

Amazon KDP is free to publish on but leaves you to run the launch alone. FossPress is also £0 upfront but runs the launch for you on rev-share, earning only a share of the sales it drives.

Amazon KDP is genuinely free to publish on, and if you want to do everything yourself, it is a great tool. But "free to publish" is not "free to launch". Once your book is live, getting it in front of readers, reviewers, schools, libraries, bookshops, listings, ads, is a second full-time job, and on KDP you do all of it alone.

FossPress is also £0 upfront, but it is not the same offer as KDP. We don't just host the book, we run the launch for you: the reviewer outreach, the school and library approaches, the bookshop trade supply, the listings and the ads, fired together while you keep writing. We only earn when your book sells; costs are recouped from sales, never invoiced, not yours. If you'd otherwise pay a hybrid service thousands to do this, or spend months doing it yourself, that is the cost the launchpad route removes.

So what should you budget?

Frequently asked

Is it free to publish a children's book in the UK?

Publishing platforms like Amazon KDP are free to use, and traditional publishers pay you rather than the other way around. But making a children's book well, illustration, editing and a cover, costs money on the do-it-yourself route, and the launch costs either money or a lot of your time. FossPress is £0 upfront on rev-share, so there is no bill before your book sells.

How much does illustration cost for a children's book?

Indicatively, a chapter book with line illustrations often runs £500 to £3,000, and a full-colour picture book £2,000 to £6,000 or more, depending on the illustrator and the number of images. It is usually the biggest single cost.

Do I have to pay for an ISBN?

In the UK, ISBNs are sold by Nielsen, around £91 for one and £169 for ten at the time of writing. Amazon KDP provides a free ISBN, but it names Amazon as the publisher. FossPress handles the ISBN so you do not have to.

What does £0 upfront on rev-share mean?

You pay nothing to get started or to have your launch run. FossPress earns a share only when your book sells, so if it does not sell you have not lost money upfront.
